Considering a secondment? The basics of industry and business for postdocs

A half-day workshop to explore how to be most effective in an industrial or business secondment.

  • How do industry and business differ from University… and what is similar?
  • What drives them and how do they operate?
  • What are the teams and projects like and how do you become a well oiled cog in that machine?
  • How do individuals work and interact with their colleagues?
  • What is expected of you and how should you conduct yourself?
  • What should your objectives be?

If you are about to start a secondment or thinking about finding one, this will be useful to you!

The session will kick off with a briefing session about the mechanics of setting up a secondment followed by a brief pitch from the Careers Service about fnding placements. 

Timetable:

  • 9:30-9:45 – Funding, operations and mechanics of secondments for EPSRC postdocs 
  • 9:45-10:15 – The University Careers Service on finding and securing opportunities
  • 10:15-10:30 – Coffee break
  • 10:30-12:30 – Workshop part I
  • 12:30-13:15 – Lunch
  • 13:15-15:00 - Workshop part II

The interactive workshop will be led by Steve Watts, of CambridgeIQ. Steve is a seasoned industrialist with 25 years of experience in industry and consulting, working on many diverse projects across technology and business for companies around the world.

Through open discussion, Steve will share his experiences, explain how he sees the similarities and differences between industry, business and academia, and describe what it is like to receive a temporary academic colleague.

You will explore how to be most effective, deliver great results and leave a positive legacy with your employer.
