Postdocs at Cambridge

Postdocs, or early career researchers, are crucial for the University’s world-class research and a vital part of the University community. There are just over 4,000 working in Cambridge, of which 3,000 are employed directly by the University and 1,000 are employed as Junior Research Fellows by the Colleges, the University Partner Institutes, or funded by external fellowships.

They make up more than 35% of total University staff and they are the fastest growing staff group – up by more than 160% since 2000.

They are also the most diverse staff group by nationality, coming to Cambridge from over 90 countries around the world (including around a third EU/EAA nationals).

These statistics alone tell only part of the story. It is the University’s vision for each individual postdoc to realise their potential in their own ambitions and in contributing to the University and society as a whole.

To achieve this vision, the University established the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPdA) in 2013 as the lead organisation relating to the postdoctoral community. There are also dedicated programmes for postdocs at the Careers Service and the Researcher Development Programme, and subsidised staff housing for which many postdocs will be eligible.

The community of Cambridge postdocs contributes actively to a rich environment of support, through the Postdocs of Cambridge Society (PdOC) and other postdoc-led organisations.

There is a lot of support for postdocs embedded around the University so we have created this website to help you easily navigate your way to all of the resources that are available to you. We hope it will be a useful resource throughout your time here.

The following pages provide details of the OPdA’s role within the University, who we are and what we’re working on, and how this all fits into the wider research/higher education landscape.
