Volunteers

Volunteers are a crucial part of Office of Postdoctoral Affairs – they help us to answer queries from the postdocs who contact us, manage room bookings at the Postdoc Centres, run events and projects, and improve our activities.

They make a huge difference to the service we provide, and make our office a more interesting, more productive and happier place to work.

Volunteer roles at the OPdA are open to anyone, but we primarily recruit volunteers who are partners of postdocs at the University – enabling them to contribute to the postdoc community and the mission of the OPdA.

Training

Volunteers are provided with an induction, one-to-one training and support, and a personal development plan to identify key areas and skills they would like to develop.

We also fund our volunteers to undertake English language training at the University Language Centre, if desired.

We can also help our volunteers find paid employment within or outside the University if this is something they want to pursue. Since the OPdA opened, 40 volunteers have worked with us, from 26 different countries. Of these, almost 50% have since moved on to paid employment.

These volunteer groups have collaborated, expanded and created small and vital social groups within the community.
