Online Professional Development

Many services and departments across the University have created online development opportunities for postdocs which can be accessed remotely at any time.

You can find details of each of them below.

We welcome your ideas for new professional development training and opportunities. You can submit these or vote on ideas submitted by other postdocs via slido.

Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPdA)

The OPdA has been adapting its traditionally in-person activities for online delivery. Be sure to check the weekly OPdA Bulletin for the latest offerings or visit the Postdoc Calendar for upcoming scheduled events.

The OPdA has moved its Postdoc Welcome Event for new postdoctoral research staff online. If you haven't previously attended one of these sessions, be sure to sign up to learn about the range of services, resources and benefits available to you as a postdoc at the University of Cambridge.

The OPdA has also been hosting regular Q&A sessions to address postdocs' questions and concerns about the impact of the current COVID-19 situation.

Researcher Development

The Researcher Development team provides development opportunities for postdoctoral researchers and research staff. There are many ways that you can engage in Researcher Development online and remotely, and we are actively developing more.

Listen to RD Audio at our new YouTube channel, including the most recent podcasts on Procrastination, Resilience and Communicating Remotely.

Online Researcher Development Coaching for all postdocs, tailored to individual need. These provide opportunities to consider and discuss topics relating to learning, skills and personal development.

Postdoc Careers Service

During this period the Postdoc Careers Service is operating an online provision. You can still speak with a postdoc careers adviser via a Skype or phone appointment and workshops are available online.

Cambridge Centre for Teaching & Learning (CCTL)

CCTL’s introductory Teaching Remotely Guides identify some challenges arising from starting to teach (and learn) online, and offer some ideas and examples of ways to address them. This includes support and advice on conducting supervision and lecturing online.

LinkedIn Learning

Linkedin Learning is widely used by academic and business institutions across the world, and is now available to all University students and staff. You can now explore thousands of online courses, to help you with your research, to contribute to your professional development, or just for fun!

Personal & Professional Development (PPD)

PPD delivers practical and relevant online development opportunities to all staff of the University of Cambridge.

PPD on demand are short, high impact resources to enable skills and knowledge to be developed quickly and easily and complement the more in-depth online courses

Office of Scholarly Communication (OSC)

In collaboration with Cambridge University Libraries, OSC offers regular training for early career researchers.

During Easter Term 2020 this is available online at Library Guides: Research Skills Training.

Public Engagement

The public engagement team provide a wide range of training and bespoke advice on applying for funding, building partnerships, and evaluation.

The University of Cambridge Engaged Researcher Training is now running an online edition.

The specially developed online format of the workshops allows participants to mainly work in their own time while receiving training sessions, mentoring and hands-on activities to develop their own ideas and materials.

Wellbeing support and E&D

Prioritising your wellbeing is essential for professional success. There is a range of resources available for postdocs via the HR Division's Equality & Diversity Office, including training and events and links to a range of diversity networks, many of which provide support related to COVID-19.

If you are finding the current situation particularly difficult and need to speak with someone confidentially about how you are feeling, the HR Division also offers free 24/7 anonymous online support for mental health wellbeing via access to The Big White Wall.

Other resources

You may also wish to explore the University's list of learning and development providers on the Staff Professional Development homepage for a range of other training providers and opportunities.
