last modified Aug 16, 2017 10:51 AM
The Returning Carers Scheme provides funds to support career development following a career break or a period of leave for caring responsibilities.

The ninth round of the Returning Carers Scheme led to the successful award of grants to 32 members of staff (including 3 male awardees). In total, grants of over £1m have been awarded to over 250 staff since this Scheme was launched in 2013.

Applications are now being accepted for the next round of the scheme - covering expenditure from 1 February 2018 to 31 July 2018.

Applications should be made using the form available on the HR website.

Please note that the guidance states that this application should include confirmation that it is in line with the aims of the scheme, that the items requested are of personal benefit to the member of staff and that there is no other source of funding (e.g. grant funding).

In addition, it should be confirmed that there would be no adverse effect on colleagues, e.g. if the application is for teaching relief.

The HR Business Manager for your School or Department can provide guidance on completing this statement, as needed.

The scheme can cover the following types of activities:

  • Attendance at conferences in the UK and overseas
  • Short-term research support
  • Teaching 'buy-outs' for college or departmental teaching
  • Travel and accommodation costs of research collaborators coming to Cambridge
  • Indirect childcare expenses
  • Secondments or short term research assignments
  • Training to support career development
  • Support for assistance in grant writing
  • Equipment purchase to support independent research

Applications should be submitted to  by 5pm on Friday 29 September 2017 together with a statement of support from the Head of Department.
