Stipendiary Junior Research Fellowships in Urban Studies October 2017, King's College

last modified Aug 17, 2016 11:35 AM

King’s College wishes to appoint with effect from 1st October 2017 one or more Junior Research Fellow/s with a research interest in the social and cultural life of cities and intellectual curiosity concerning the synergies between socio-cultural anthropology, human geography and architecture.

The competition is not limited to any region of the world.  Possible themes, which are not exclusive, include: migration and emerging patterns of socio-demographic change; inequality and exclusion in cities; urban social movements and enclaves; religiosity and post-secular urbanism; new and emergent urban spaces; different modes of infrastructure provision; informal economies and their possibilities for innovation; the articulation and inscription of urban myths; network-oriented studies of connectivity / discontinuity among urban residents; bio-political dimensions to urban life; human subjectivity and changing patterns of intimacy in everyday life.

For several years King’s has invested in the study of cities. Several Fellows, especially in Anthropology, Architecture and Human Geography, have an interest in urban research and there have been recent appointments to a Junior Research Fellowship in urban history and a College Research Associate position on urban ecology and environments. A Junior Research Fellowship in social and cultural aspects of the contemporary city provides an exciting opportunity to complement and expand research in this field.

A Junior Research Fellowship is a postdoctoral position tenable for up to 4 years. Applications are welcome from graduates of any university. Candidates should have completed a PhD in social anthropology, human geography, sociology, politics, architectural theory or a cognate field, and must not have undertaken more than 2 years of postdoctoral work by 1st October 2017 (i.e. the PhD cannot have been granted before 30th September 2015).

The closing date for applications is 9 am on Thursday, 15th September. Full details, including the method of application, are given on the King's College website: http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/research/junior-research-fellowships.html
