Make the most of Cambridge

Congratulations on securing a postdoctoral position in Cambridge. You have come to a world-leading institution in a great city. It is an important and potentially life-changing step in your career, and you will almost certainly have many questions. Hopefully, your group leader, your colleagues and department will be able to answer most of these questions, especially around the research culture. We hope this web portal provides routes to answer others, and also insights into many of the other benefits of being in the University.

The University has a lot to offer postdocs, and much of it is not immediately obvious. A good place to start is the Postdocs of Cambridge Society, run by postdocs for postdocs. If you have come with family, then do contact the Newcomers and Visiting Scholars to see what support they can offer. We take your professional development very seriously, and provide many courses though Personal Professional Development. It is also never too early to set up a dialogue with the Careers Service. You might be planning to pursue an academic career, but, remember, more than half of Cambridge postdocs end up in other sectors.

While you are in Cambridge, your main focus is almost certainly going to be your research, but do make the most of the fantastic range of talks, concerts and events that take place throughout the year. Take the opportunity to get involved - through teaching, helping to run your research group or volunteering to support the postdoc community. Whatever you do, do not leave Cambridge without visiting the Fitzwilliam Museum or the Botanic Garden!
